Photo Caption:

This Coast Guard publicity photo taken in 1946 shows Mae Kennedy, wife of lighthouse keeper Andrew H. Kennedy, doing light-housekeeping as she washed the windows of the lantern at Bear Island Lighthouse. The caption read “Once over lightly is the order for the day at Bear Island Lighthouse.” She wanted to make sure that everything was left in tip-top shape before they left the island forever to start on their next life’s journey.
